For those who don’t know, today is the International Day of Clean Energy 2026! It is a day that highlights the importance that renewable and low carbon energy plays in tackling climate change.
The International Day of Clean Energy on 26th January was declared by the UN General Assembly. 26th January is also the founding date of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), an intergovernmental agency that supports countries in transitioning to renewable energy.
Renewable energy sources are available all around us, provided by the sun, wind, water, waste and heat from the earth, they are replenished by nature and emit very little greenhouse gases.
Transitioning to clean energy is vital to support fuel security and limit the impacts of climate change, as large amounts of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are generated through burning fossil fuels for energy.
In recent years positive progress has been made towards the transition to clean energy with the installed capacity per capita reaching a high of 341 watts in developing countries up from 155 watts in 2015. Today renewable energy generation makes up around 37% the United Kingdom’s National Grid.
Although this is a positive step there is still lots of work to be done, today we urge people and other businesses to raise awareness and take steps towards the use of cleaner energy.
