COP 29 is the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference, taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 11th to 22nd November 2024. It is a pivotal opportunity to accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis. COPs are the world’s only multilateral decision-making forum on climate change that brings together almost every country on Earth.
Sir Keir Starmer announced today at the conference that a new climate target for the UK has been set to reduce the country’s emissions by 81% by 2035 against 1990 levels. This target has been considered ambitious at the conference, however, the new prime minister seems confident that this target can be reached.
The Prime Miniter intends to position the UK “on the frontline” in addressing climate by demonstrating that within the in the first 100 days of government the Labour has launched Great British Energy and closed the UK’s final coal power plant. Can this target still be reached by the UK?
There are major discussions happening surrounding the funding that the poorer countries require to implement the measures necessary to move away from fossil fuels and towards more renewable energy sources. This funding will be provided by the richer countries to show a global effort to reduce global warming and slow down the current rate of climate change.
The UN has warned that the existing policies are so far falling short, and the world is now on-track for 3.1oC of global warming which could have catastrophic impacts to the worlds climate. It has recently been confirmed that this year will, once again be the hottest year on record, it is expected that this will be a talking point at the conference.
